Princess Diana known as ‘The People’s Princess’ and the love affair with Christian Dior coincided with the new sense of freedom she found in her fashion choices in the mid ’90s One of the reasons for the Lady Dior’s success is that it was carried and cherished by such an iconic figure, who to this day remains an inspiration to many women.

The Royal Family has always loved Christian Dior. Princess Margaret’s 21st birthday dress was designed by Dior, which she described as her “favourite dress of all”. Forwards to November 1995, the Lady Dior bag was born, almost immediately writing itself in the history of fashion during Diana’s trip to Argentina. She was captured carrying her new Chouchou bag gifted by Bernadette Chirac, the first Lady of France at the Grand Palais in Paris.

Four months after her divorce, The Princess of Wales went onto commission another at the Met Gala 1996. Dressed by young creative director of Dior, John Galliano, in the famous midnight blue satin slip to match the color of her eyes as in Diana’s words “because is suited [her] well”. The accessory renamed "Lady Dior" in her honour, quickly gained a following. Mass-produced, it sold 200,000 copies in just two years: an unprecedented success, which has remained unchanged today.

It is a concentration of the House’s excellence, season after season, as it continues to forge its timeless legacy. Dior Lady Art under creative direction of Maria Grazia Chiuri in 2016, gave the bag a modern flair when it tapped a select group of creatives to reinterpret the Lady Dior handbag with their own artistic visions to pay tribute to the savoir-faireof the brand.

Today it is also available in large and micro editions as well as customisable versions showcased by relevant figures with an undercurrent of royal links (previously worn by the Duchess of Sussex). Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Princess Diana in seasons five and six of “The Crown” has been named as a brand ambassador for Dior Joaillerie. The Australian actress shares the contents of her bag in the "In My Lady…" series as a resemblance to the legacy of Diana living on today.

Revealed at the Dior autumn-winter 2022-2023 ready-to-wear show, the Lady 95.22 echoes the year 1995, when the Lady Dior was established. Dior introduces an exclusive campaign, exalting the multiple facets of a plural femininity. A message of “universal and essential sisterhood” embodied by exceptional women. A commemoration of the Lady Dior and the various expressions of elegance that weave connections between the heritage and creative future of Dior.
